The Role of the WHS Committee & WHS Duty Holders
All workplaces should have a WHS Committee & Duty Holders, purposely for their role of serving and establishing a communication between the workers and management. Their role is to take care of issues designated by the work group and they also have the authority to do a number of things that in their judgment, can better the company/ workplace.
Committee duties include:
- Monitoring safety practices like the procedure for reporting hazards and accidents ot inspecting machinery.
- Being aware of specific health and safety problems (taking walk around inspections, considering hazard or accident reports).
- Identifying workplace hazards.
- Working out safe job procedures and monitoring their effectiveness.
- Organising workplace training about health and safety.
- Providing ways to solve disagreements or problems.
WHS COMMITTEE
Organisations with more than 20 employees must have an elected WHS Committee. Management and employees form a committee to identify and resolve WHS issues and to develop and monitor safe systems and procedure.
WHS DUTIE HOLDERS
Elected OHS representatives represent and communicate the safety concerns of designated ‘workgroups’. OHS representatives also recommend solutions to OHS issues affecting their workgroup.
